After making black-eyed peas for New Year's Eve, I looked up a lot of recipes for BEPs from the Middle East. The Egyptian version is made with stewed beef and tomato sauce. Like many Middle Eastern recipes it's unhelpfully called loubiya, which just means "beans". I took this vegan recipe and ruined it by adding … Continue reading Loubiya

Bonfire
We made a bonfire in the backyard in the country. I had to dig down half a meter through the snow to get to the firepit, and the firewood pile was rimed with ice, but once I got it started with dry fireplace wood, everything went up really well.
Wordle-solving code
I took some time to write code to solve Wordle-like guessing games. It was a fun problem to work on. I posted my code on Gitlab in the Wordfinder repo. The funnest part was working on the eliminative word solver, which tries to bisect the list of candidate words with each guess. It performed pretty … Continue reading Wordle-solving code
Tsiknopempti
Last Thursday was Tsiknopempti, the Greek BBQ holiday that precedes Lent. We were all in separate houses on Thursday, so I got us caught up on Sunday with some broiled Greek lamb chops and potatoes. Paired with a nice Greek red, it feels like a night out in Athens.

A first rapid antigen test initially gave us a negative result for COVID-19, but a second test on Monday morning gave a positive. … Continue reading I Lost The Game
Powdermill
I went walking at the powder mill in Windsor. For supper on meatless Monday, hummus and cauliflower cakes
Picnic roast
They had picnic roast on sale at the grocery store, so I gave it a shot and made pulled pork. It took about 8 hours but it tastes really good.
Snow walk
I took a walk in the woods near our house in Melbourne. We had freezing rain and then fresh snow and the woods look beautiful. This is the SCCNRS, a preserve protecting the Salmon River entrance into the St. François.
Chicken soup and biscuits
We are having a hard week and this is helping a little. I made this soup with just a little stock, two chicken breasts, minced garlic, broccoli, salt, pepper, onion powder, paprika, parsley and thyme. The biscuits are from Wikibooks Cookbook and came out great.
