One of the points about climate change that really struck me in Naomi Klein's On Fire was that change happens on a multi-generational time scale. You have to know an area really well to notice small changes, and you have to have generational shared knowledge to document that kind of change. But our modern world … Continue reading This Is Where You Belong

Family Book Club
I mentioned in my post about Epicurus's Birthday that we'd had a family book club night to celebrate. Epicurus loved good food, good people, and good conversation, so it seemed like an appropriate celebration. But everyone got really interested in the book club, so I am including some details here! We are a family of … Continue reading Family Book Club
Epicurus’s Birthday
Today is 10 Gamelion on the Attic Calendar, at least according to some date converter I could find on the Internet. 10 Gamelion was the birthday of the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus. He celebrated the day with a feast every year. In his will, he asked his followers to continue, which apparently they did. Epicurus's … Continue reading Epicurus’s Birthday
Don’t Look Up
I just finished the Netflix film Don't Look Up. I liked it a lot, although there were parts I felt were off-base as metaphors about the crises we currently face on Earth. The primary thing was the focus on ideas, politics, and beliefs. The lead characters spend a lot of time trying to convince the … Continue reading Don’t Look Up
Perihelion 2022
Happy day of perihelion to those who celebrate. For those of us on Earth, the Moon, and in Earth orbit, this is the day of our revolutionary cycle that we are closest to the sun; about 1.7% more than average. Enjoy your proximity to Sol! For those robots on Mars, you can look forward to … Continue reading Perihelion 2022
Vassilopita
Thanks to my Aunt Helen for the recipe for this vassilopita, a Greek new year's sweet bread. My household usually does galette des rois on Jan 6, but we get it from a bakery and it's usually a source of grief at the end of a long holiday vacation. Hopefully this handmade bread brings joy … Continue reading Vassilopita
Happy New Year
Happy new Gregorian year to those who celebrate. Black-eyed peas bring good luck on New Year's Day. I made a spicier version than normal. It tastes great!
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Amita and I made ma'amoul for her class, and there wasn't any leftover for the family, so I made a pile of oatmeal raisin cookies. They'll go good with other Christmas cookies, too, I figure.
Lamb-eggplant stew
We had friends over to our house for the first time in a long time. We had lamb-eggplant stew over rice, plus mujuddarah for the vegetarians. A lot of dessert, plus homemade eggnog and fruitcake. Overall, a nice time.
Tired of the mall
I took our 2017 Bolt EV to the dealer in Sherbrooke to put on winter tires, add a roof rack, and a trailer hitch. There was also a battery charger software upgrade needed. Since it was going to take a few hours, they put me on a shuttle and sent me to the mall nearby. … Continue reading Tired of the mall
